Fraudulent emails, also known as phishing emails, are a real and constant threat. While email hosting platforms are continually trying to prevent these fraudulent emails from making it to your inbox, there are some emails that slip past. To ensure the security of your personal information, you must act as the human spam filter.

How to Identify a Fraudulent Email

1. Review the sender (Reply-To) email address. In an attempt to impersonate a reputable organization, scammers will send emails from a similar domain. The key is to watch for spelling errors (i.e. scammer@n0rvado.com or scammer@noruado.com).
2. Check who the email is addressed to. A legitimate email will use the name of the account holder and not typically use terminology like “Dear Webmail User”.
3. The company name is not clearly stated within the email. Scammers will often use generic email templates using obscure senders or terminology.
4. If you are being asked to provide personal information through an unsolicited email, it is most likely a scam.
5. The email conveys a sense of urgency. It is common for phishing emails to claim your account has been comprised or request immediate action to avoid some negative consequence.
6. Finally, be sure to check the spelling within the email. A common characteristic of phishing emails is typos and/or misspelled words.

If you receive a fraudulent or phishing email, please mark it as spam. This will help your email spam filter to learn which types of emails to consider spam and further protect your inbox from fraudulent emails in the future.
