THIS ROLE

Will combine responsibilities of operating equipment and machinery for direct bury operations, such as direct bury plows and horizontal directional drilling equipment, with maintaining, troubleshooting, and supporting customer network installations.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

As a full-time, Construction Specialist your duties and responsibilities will include:

  • Place and maintain underground cable and conduit systems.
  • Maintain rights-of-way and construction project cleanups, including patching roadways and backfill areas, lawns, and landscaping.
  • Install and remove aerial cable.
  • Install and maintain pedestals, poles, carrier sites, and equipment at subscriber locations.
  • Operate equipment required in burying cable plant, including vibratory plows, excavators, trenchers, and horizontal directional drilling equipment, in burying mainlines in rights-of-way and easements, as well as service drops at customer locations.
  • Respond to outside plant emergency calls.
  • Provide excellent customer service by maintaining, troubleshooting, installing, and documenting customer and business premise equipment and servicing infrastructure.
  • Recommend, sell, and install additional products and services to customers.
  • Install and support residential and business customer networks, including ONTs, Wi-Fi routers, commercial network servers, PCs, software, firewalls, routers, switches, and wireless networks.
  • Use test equipment and software to locate trouble, record, localize, repair, bill accordingly, and close trouble tickets, with minimal repeats.
  • Follow procedures or best practices on inventory control, neatness, truck stock, and correct material use.
  • Ensure safety in work techniques and the environment.

Any other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in fiber optic construction or telecommunications infrastructure.
  • Strong knowledge of fiber optic cable installation techniques, equipment, and industry standards.
  • Proficiency in operating and maintaining fiber optic construction equipment, such as trenchers, plows, and boring machines.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction plans, blueprints, and specifications.
  • OSHA certification or equivalent safety training is preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to various job sites as needed.
  • Knowledge and skills usually acquired through a certification/diploma program or associates degree in telecommunications, IT, electronic or related field.
  • Computer and customer residential and commercial network literacy and an ability to learn Norvado proprietary operating software and applications.

SKILLS, ABILITIES, QUALIFICATIONS OR EXPECTATIONS

You’ll excel greatly as a Construction Specialist if you possess the following:

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities to address construction challenges on-site.
  • Detail-oriented with a commitment to maintaining high standards of safety and quality in construction work.
  • Ability to work effectively in various weather conditions and environments.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality with regard to company and customer data.
  • Comply with RUS specifications, industry standards, safety rules and regulations, and company policies.

REPORTING STRUCTURE

This position reports directly to the Fiber Optic Construction Forman/Supervisor and works closely with the Engineering Department.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

The role requires working in an outdoor environment with exposure to weather conditions, fumes, dust, odors, and moving mechanical parts. The job also involves high noise levels, frequent vehicular travel, and occasionally working in high or precarious places. The employee must be able to lift, push, pull, and carry items up to 80 pounds.

EQUIPMENT & TOOLS

DAILY USE OF: construction equipment such as trenchers, plows, bucket trucks, and boring machines, along with regular use of computer, telephone, smart devices, and other office equipment.

CUSTOMER SERVICE/INTERACTION

  • Daily phone, written, and face-to-face contact with employees in all departments to exchange information.
  • Daily phone and face-to-face contact with customers to conduct business.
  • Daily phone and written contact with vendors, contractors, and consultants to complete job tasks.

OTHER

  • Occasional overnight travel required.
  • Occasional travel by air required.
  • Frequent travel by vehicle required.
  • Frequent flexible hours required.
