What are Capital Credits?

Capital credits represent each member’s ownership of the cooperative. They are the margins credited (or allocated) to the members of the cooperative based on their purchases from the cooperative during the previous year. These margins are used by the cooperative as capital to operate the business for a period of time.

What capital credits are not:

Capital credits should not be confused with profits, which are a return on capital. Retirement of capital credits is a return of member-furnished capital. Cooperatives exist not to make a profit but to provide low-cost services.

What is the difference between an allocation and a retirement?

Allocations are made annually for each member, based upon the amount of services purchased the previous year. An allocation is the amount set aside into a separate account to be used as operating capital for reliability improvements and maintenance over a period of years. Your allocation notice will be mailed to you.

A retirement is the amount you receive back as a capital credit refund. It is a percentage of your total capital credit balance. The percentage to retire is decided by the board of directors annually, based upon the financial condition of the cooperative.

Can I use my capital credit allocation to pay on my bill?

No. Allocations are used as the operating capital of the cooperative. They are not available until a percentage is retired and refunded back to you as the Cooperative’s financial condition warrants and the board of directors approves.

Why can’t my capital credit allocations be refunded to me all at once?

Remember that capital credit funds are used for reliability improvements and maintenance— and these are long term investments. Capital credits cannot be refunded all at once because they help the cooperative remain financially sound, thereby ensuring a stable, reliable service for the benefit of the members we serve.

How are my capital credit allocations used until I receive them?

Capital credit allocations are pooled together and used as operating capital so that we can serve our members with reliable service. These funds pay for service reliability improvements and maintenance.

If we refunded the total amount of allocations, we would have to borrow that amount of money in order to continue operating. Having operating capital helps the cooperative minimize the amount of high-interest money it must borrow, which in turn helps lower member’s costs by stabilizing rates.

Affordable Connectivity Program

Norvado is working to help build awareness about the Affordable Connectivity Program, a Federal Communications Commission (FCC) program. The new long-term benefit will help to lower the cost of broadband service for eligible households struggling to afford internet service.

The $14 billion Affordable Connectivity Program provides a discount of up to a $30 per month toward broadband service for eligible households and up to $75 per month for qualifying households on qualifying Tribal lands. The benefit also provides up to a $100 per household discount toward a one-time purchase of a computer, laptop, or tablet if the household contributes more than $10 and less than $50 toward the purchase through a participating broadband provider.

A household is eligible if one member of the household meets at least one of the criteria below:

  • Has an income that is at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines;
  • Participates in certain assistance programs, such as SNAP, Medicaid, Federal Public Housing Assistance, SSI, WIC, or Lifeline;
  • Participates in one of several Tribal specific programs, such as Bureau of Indian Affairs General Assistance, Tribal Head Start (only households meeting the relevant income qualifying standard) Tribal TANF, or Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations;
  • Is approved to receive benefits under the free and reduced-price school lunch program or the school breakfast program, including through the USDA Community Eligibility Provision;
  • Received a Federal Pell Grant during the current award year; or
  • Meets the eligibility criteria for a participating broadband provider’s existing low-income program.

Affordable Connectivity Program enrollment opened on December 31, 2021. Eligible households within Norvado’s service area can enroll directly through Norvado (www.norvado.com/acp) or by going to ACPBenefit.org to submit an online application or print a mail-in application. Additional information about the Emergency Broadband Benefit is available at www.fcc.gov/ACP, or by calling 877-384-2575 between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. ET any day of the week.

2021/2022 Norvado Directory

In the age of technology, the traditional telephone directory is still held near and dear to the hearts of many of our community members. Because of this, we have invested resources into publishing a directory that continues to be a staple of the Northwoods’ homes and businesses. The 2021/2022 directory covers Norvado’s service areas of Price County and Bayfield County and beyond.

In printing the directory, there was an error in which the free yellow page listings were omitted from the directory. This error affects nearly 200 business customers within Price County. Norvado’s directory publisher, Pinnacle Marketing is doing the following to make resolutions for the error that was made:

  1. A supplementary mailing with the omitted listings will be sent to all addresses in Price County.
  2. An enhanced online directory will be available, including the 200 omitted listings.

Supplemental Printing – Additional Listings

Norvado shall have no liability or responsibility to customers for any omission or error with respect to customers’ telephone directory listings.

Norvado Rises to the Wellness Challenge — And the Results Pay Off for Employees and Local School Districts

Norvado Employees Smash 2021 Target, Logging More Than 22,000 Miles of Activity; Service Provider Contributes $2,250 to Five School Districts to Improve Student Exercise Facilities

December 6, 2021, Cable, WI: To turn the page on 2020 and help make health and wellness a priority for 2021, Norvado challenged its employees to commit to recording one mile of exercise per day, setting a company goal of reaching 20,210 miles between January 1 and October 31. Norvado employees shattered the target, reporting 22,023 miles of walking, running, hiking, biking, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing over the 10-month period.

To further incentivize employees, Norvado pledged to contribute 10 cents per mile, ultimately raising $2,250, which they donated to five local school districts to support and improve student fitness facilities. Last month, Norvado presented $450 to the following school districts: School District of Phillips; Prentice School District; Drummond Area School District; South Shore School District; and School District of Maple.

“After everything that our communities had been through in 2020, we wanted to put the year behind us and what better way than to focus on our health and wellness,” said Chad Young, CEO, Norvado. “We wanted to make 2021 ten times better—so we created a goal of logging 20,210 miles of exercise in 10 months. I’m so proud to say that our Norvado family blew away that goal, beating it by nearly 2,000 miles. And not only have we improved our own physical and mental fitness, but we were also able to give back to the communities that support us. We were thrilled to donate $450 to each of the school districts in our service area to help students reach their fitness goals.”

Norvado Grows Their Brand, Sees 80% Growth in Managed WIFI Subscribers in 12 Months

SAN JOSE, CA – October 20, 2021 – Calix, Inc. (NYSE: CALX) today announced at Calix ConneXions 2021 that it selected Norvado as the winner of the 2021 Innovations in Marketing award. This award recognizes the broadband service provider (BSP) customer that has a highly creative marketing approach to reaching, engaging, and exciting subscribers. Norvado leveraged the full solution to simplify marketing operations, exciting subscribers with new services, and growing revenue and profitability. Norvado was able to create, brand, and launch its Apex Managed WIFI service in less than 30 days, thanks to the vast array of easy-to-customize EDGE Enablement activation content. Since the launch, the service provider has grown its managed WIFI subscribers by 80 percent in 12 months.

Norvado based its marketing strategy on data and subscriber insights. By mining the behavioral insights delivered through Calix Marketing Cloud (Marketing Cloud) they developed a deep understanding of their subscribers’ needs for enhanced, value-added services. Norvado created new service bundles that included advanced services including parental controls and network security. As a result of its outstanding marketing, Norvado has achieved an incredible 99 percent adoption of its Apex Managed WIFI service among new subscribers, along with a 38 percent take rate of EDGE Suites, while increasing margins to 60 percent, a 400 percent increase in the last 12 months.

“We are honored to receive this recognition from Calix as it underscores our success in transitioning from a traditional telco model to providing the high-value, personalized managed services that our subscribers demand,” said Chad Young, CEO, Norvado. “Our subscribers have enthusiastically embraced our Apex Managed WIFI service, and we’re building on this strong foundation with additional managed services. Calix has been the ideal partner on this journey, providing state-of-the-art technology and continuous innovation that puts our brand, and only our brand, first.”

A Calix customer since late 2019, Norvado has reimagined its value proposition, providing rural Wisconsin subscribers the types of services once only available in major metropolitan areas. In addition to rapidly increasing uptake of its premier Apex Managed WIFI service as well as profitability, Norvado has achieved many other impressive results.

  • Drove adoption of the CommandIQ® app to 80 percent of subscribers. Norvado has placed its branded version of the CommandIQ app at the center of the Apex Managed WIFI experience. Eighty percent of subscribers have adopted the app and 38 percent have purchased EDGE Suites for enhanced parental controls and home network security.
  • Migrated 200 subscribers from legacy WiFI systems in 30 days. With Marketing Cloud, Norvado identified existing subscribers that would benefit from the Apex Managed WIFI service and developed a creative upgrade program. The service provider converted nearly 200 subscribers to the new service in less than 30 days.
  • Reduced support costs 30 percent while significantly reducing truck rolls. The combination of self-serve capabilities in the Apex Managed WIFI app and Calix Support Cloud—which provides real-time intelligence to resolve issues, improve call times, and reduce escalations—has enabled Norvado to dramatically reduce truck rolls and increase operational efficiency.

“We are delighted to present Norvado with the Innovations in Marketing award,” said Matt Collins, executive vice president of commercial operations and chief marketing officer at Calix. “Their go-to-market approach should be a model for other BSP’s. Norvado has leveraged world-class broadband solutions and data-driven intelligence to create a compelling service offering, develop and execute an omnichannel marketing strategy, and drive unbelievable adoption rates for their service. They are a shining example of a service provider that is delivering the ultimate WIFI experience for their subscribers, and in doing so, building greater value in their community.”

Register for the ConneXions 2021 Learning Experience, which takes place virtually November 16-18 at Calix.com.

Norvado Rolls Out New High-Speed Fiber Internet Packages for Consumers and Businesses in the Northwoods

New Plans Will Deliver up to Six Times More Bandwidth for the Same Low Price

June 30, 2021, Cable, WI: Norvado is rolling out new high-speed fiber Internet packages and pricing, giving Northwoods consumers and businesses one of the best value connectivity packages available anywhere in the United States. With consumer plans starting at $79.99 for 300/300 Mbps Internet and business plans starting at $99.99 for 500/500 Mbps Internet, Norvado is delivering the massive, symmetrical bandwidth and blazing-fast performance that will allow you to do more of everything you love: surfing, streaming, working, learning, video-calling, gaming, posting, sharing, and connecting. The new plans will deliver up to six times more bandwidth while maintaining the same low pricing.

“For more than 70 years, Norvado has been focused on using cutting-edge technology to deliver innovative communications services to residents and businesses across Northern Wisconsin,” said Chad Young, CEO, Norvado. “Our broadband service, backed by our world-class fiber network, helps Northwoods businesses to thrive and gives our residents the very best in communications, online entertainment, home automation and more. With the new plans and pricing that we’re announcing today—which are equal to or better than anything you’ll find in major cities—we’re taking that experience to the next level.”

For residents and businesses in Price County, this summer marks a major step in the transition from the legacy copper DSL network to Norvado’s state-of-the-art, high-speed fiber broadband network. Norvado continues to move residents and businesses on to the new fiber network, with this changeover expected to be fully completed in 2023. With the new fiber network, Price County residents will now be able to select from speed tiers ranging from 300/300 Mbps to 1/1Gbps—compared to maximum speeds of 20/2 Mbps on copper—while businesses can start at 500/500 Mbps and go up to 2/2 Gbps. More information on the Price County network rollout schedule is available at www.norvado.com/fiber.

Norvado’s fiber-based broadband network forms the foundation for a wide range of residential services including Internet, managed WIFI, TV, phone, smart home, and business solutions such as Internet, voice, video, network, security, telecommuter services and more. Full details on Norvado’s residential and business offerings, as well as the new broadband plans and pricing are available at Norvado.com.
